2020 Hermes Creative Awards Spotlight: Columbia Records

We’ll continue to feature some of this year’s most noteworthy Hermes Creative Awards entries throughout the competition.

Hermes Creative Awards

Organization: Columbia Records
Location: New York, NY
Title of Entry: “ALIENS EXIST! BLINK-182 x AREA 51″
Category: Public Relations/Communications | Strategic Programs | 80c. Social Marketing Campaign ($175)

Social media is a fluid and quickly moving stream which requires rapid responses and agile strokes to navigate. Record companies, with their millions of Gen Z and Millennials consumers, have been forced to adapt perhaps even sooner than most other companies. Blink-182 is one of Columbia Records’ better-known bands. On September 20, 2019, the punk-pop band was set to release an album and wrap their summer tour at Brooklyn’s Barclay Center. September 20 also happened to be the day that alien enthusiasts were set to conduct a viral raid on Area 51 in Nevada–long known as a secret, mysterious government site and home to many conspiracies. One of Blink-182’s fan-favorite songs happens to be “Aliens Exist.” Columbia pulled together the pieces to create a huge flow of user-generated content amplified across a network of influencers, online outlets, and the band’s personal channels. What they created garnered millions of impressions and hundreds-of-thousands of engagements online. And yes, the night of the concert there were dancing aliens on stage. Great job, team!

Hermes Creative Awards

Organization: DMi Partners
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Title of Entry: “Rastelli’s Logo – Knife Rack”
Category: Print Media | Design | 48. Logo

A logo is more than just a branding icon. It’s an image that has the power to immediately make a statement and announces who you are to the world. Because of brevity and visual challenges, creating a classic logo is tricky. Some companies use flourishing scripts and colorful swoops and swooshes, and others try with clever letters playing-off of the company name. Rastelli’s, a direct to consumer online butcher shop routed in family history, is not a Coca-Cola or Mercedes, but its logo is just as memorable. DMi Partners of Philadelphia crafted a logo that is eye-catching, creative, and deadly accurate; it nails the business with simple black and white sketches of animals comprised of carving knives.

Sometimes simple is better or, according to the adage and the Shakespearean quote, “brevity is the soul of wit”. Either way, a short, well-crafted message lands with a boom instead of a thud. Gruppo Carmeli is a collection of Italian car dealerships in Northern Italy. They approached Raineri Design of Milan to create a publicity campaign to sell their Nissans, Renaults, and Mercedes. Spread across the internet and billboards, the campaign portrays the dealership as safety-oriented, committed to service, and green conscious. Raineri weaves car parts to create a company logo accentuated by minimal graphics.

Category: Electronic Media / Social Media / Interactive Media | Video | 169. Nonprofit

Greenpeace is an international environmental organization whose tactics are aggressive to achieve maximum impact. The organization has rammed ships and unleashed water canons to face-down environmental lawbreakers. Recently, Greenpeace launched a social media video campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of single-use plastic while calling out one of the biggest global contributors to the problem. It’s fairly dark, but not without a bit of humor. The campaign message hits home in this spot, though corporate giant Nestle will probably not find it quite as funny.
