Enticing people to use the Metro system in car-crazy California can be described as difficult at best. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority rose to the challenge by creating a unique campaign celebrating the people and communities which the Metro connects. Metro Arts & Design commissioned various artists to depict everyday riders along the path of the refurbished A Line. The campaign, entitled “More People Than You Know”, is both intimate and relevant to the local neighborhoods. The portraits are representative of each community and are displayed on digital station screens and imprinted on Metro TAP cards. The campaign was rounded out by social media. The medical and pharmaceutical fields seem to be leading the way due to the difficulty of explaining their often complicated products. In this video, Acorda Therapeutics explains the proper use of INBRIJA, which is an oral product that treats Parkinson’s Disease. The story is simply a demonstration, but the animation brings the message to life.

What makes a great video? Storytelling is essential. There needs to be a beginning, middle, and end weaved together with flowing words from scripts and/or interviews. But a video is nothing without cinematography. It’s rare to view a video where the pictures not only support the words but elevate the script to a higher level. Outside the Frame is a video production company which draws from a deep talent pool of artists in New York and Los Angeles. The company recently produced this corporate video for architecture firm Perkins Eastman highlighting the new development center at Providence College. Title of Entry: “Abraham Lincoln Carrier / Saudi – Yamen War”

There are many ways of telling a story, and with advancing technology, there are more tools. Augmented reality superimposes computer-generated images onto a viewer’s real-view of the world. The resulting composite scenes can be both entertaining and informative. Broadcast journalists are finding more ways of using augmented reality to breakdown complicated stories for easier consumption. Aljazeera is a worldwide cable news channel providing 24-hour a day coverage to events, similar to CNN and FOX News. Recently the news channel wanted to explain the economics of the war in Yemen, which is a proxy battle between the United States backed Saudi Arabia and Iran. The report’s augmented reality uses graphic animation to present a clear picture of those involved, the economics, and the human cost.
