What if you’re a homesick NFL fan and can’t make it back to your city for the playoffs? If you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan, the city comes to you.

Visit Philadelphia works year-round to promote the city’s image and increase visitation. When the Eagles made the Super Bowl LIII playoffs, the organization noticed an increase in engagement across the organization’s social media platforms. In turn, the Visit Philadelphia team quickly devised a strategy to utilize the playoffs excitement to spread awareness surrounding Philadelphia nationwide.

Visit Philadelphia asked Eagles fans living across the country what the perfect Superbowl party, and chose 20 winners. Each of these winning fans received a special nostalgia package overnight, containing Philly cheese steaks, Tastykakes, and Eagles paraphernalia. In return, the homesick fans filmed themselves opening the package for their reactions.

Upon receiving the unboxing videos, Visit Philadelphia created an emotional video compilation of the excited fans receiving their nostalgia packages. The compilation was shared across the organization’s social media platforms and received an overwhelming response. Visit Philadelphia’s entire campaign, from initial question to unboxing video, garnered 7,400 engagements and a reach of more than 313,600.

When you think of cute and charming, a drone most likely isn’t the first thing to come to mind. But, Sam Houston State University proved drones are unexpectedly endearing through a recruitment video.

Sam Houston State University in Spring, Texas created a  video starring a drone that takes on the persona of a student. The drone has a quirky sense of humor that isn’t necessarily appreciated by his current university or parents. After incurring the wrath of fellow students at B.A.D University for being chronically late, D.J. withdraws and dejectedly looks elsewhere for a new college home.  D.J eventually finds his way to the Sam Houston State College of Arts and Media and finds he’s a perfect fit.

By using a drone as the main character, Sam Houston State was able to incorporate stunning aerial shots of its campus and student projects. The video’s quirky subject is lighthearted but certainly memorable.

AVA Digital Awards Organization: Palm Beach Atlantic University
Location: West Palm Beach, FL
Title of Entry: “Alter Falter”
Category:  193. Video Production | Long Form Video | Student Production

Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Cinema Arts program encourages students to write, produce, shoot, edit, direct and act in their own short films. These films capture each of the student filmmaker’s unique personalities through the storyline, direction, and cinematography.

One of Palm Beach Atlantic’s outstanding entries for this year’s competition tells the story of every commitment-phobe’s nightmare. “Alter Falter” revolves around a young man who is left at the altar by his bride-to-be for his best friend. The story follows the ex-groom as he goes through the typical post-break-up pains: running into your ex, getting back into dating, becoming a priest (… not so typical) and eventually moving on. The stellar production quality and storytelling present an insightful and humorous outlook on a typically depressing event.
